If you take a look at the Alex Aaronson portfolio, you will notice that I quite enjoy lake photography. Capturing the natural beauty of lakes during different times of day is truly a fascinating and very relaxing experience. However, there are certain tips you should keep in mind if you want for your photos to turn out amazing every single time. First off, you should always try to find a natural frame for your scene. Perhaps you are taking a photo of a lake from a cottage window, or through some overarching tree branches- make use of your surroundings to get a good frame and create a well-rounded view of the lake. It is also a good idea to use a wide-angle lens, that will allow you to include the lake and all of its surrounding scenery into your frame. A good lake photo will take a bit pf planning but, as soon as you find the right angle and frame, you are set up for success.
Before I started the Alex Aaronson blog, I used to think that the only way to take a lake photograph is horizontally. However, since taking up photography professionally, I have experimented with different perspectives and discovered that vertical lake photos are actually just as compelling. When you take a photo vertically, you can focus on only one part of the scene. If there is a particular area that has captured your attention, don’t hesitate to use this technique in order to really emphasise on it. This approach works particularly well if you can capture images with reflections in the water. It creates a very interesting photo that is definitely going to draw in attention.
Believe it or not, my best friend has one of my lake photos frames in their room, with a title “Alex Aaronson’s best photo, 2018”. While this was a funny joke at the time, he honestly admitted that he enjoys lake photography, especially the photos taken from a higher perspective. This is also my next tip- if you can, try taking photos from somewhere higher, so you can capture more of the lake and its surrounding landscape. If you want to invest in one, you can get a drone- these gadgets will certainly do a brilliant job at taking magnificent photos from higher in the sky. If you need some more inspiration and examples of lake photography, don’t hesitate to look through the nature photos on the Alex Aaronson blog.
